Spending time in various “spaces”, challenged me to think about community, how we define it and what makes it important. Taking time to reflect, I thought of how many different places we all become part of a community — where we live, family, friends, work, school, sports teams, volunteering, running/biking and such, church, clubs, etc.

As I thought through my own experiences of community, I realized all the amazing opportunities we have to challenge perspective and learn things from others experiences and stories.

— Through volunteering in the city, I learned that dirt bikes riding city streets is not just a bunch of people trying to cause trouble … I learned this was one time where various neighborhoods actually came together. This could be used as an opportunity to either build on that to work together in other areas or be upset because it “seems” like trouble.

— Through my career, I learned that everyone has a story and the tremendous power and value in taking time to listen. The more we share, the more we want to share and it builds trust in each other. Honest, caring space allows all of us to grow and heal.

— From friends, I learned that people genuinely want to help and there’s great power in doing things together.

— In family, I learned that things aren’t always what they seem and the value in working through the tough stuff, that’s where relationships really become stronger.

— By riding around different cities both by car and bike, street artists possess an amazing amount of talent. This can be viewed as destructive or add to the beauty of a city. I choose to find the beauty and uniqueness in each piece.

— With running and biking, I learned that through physical activity I could build some of the best, most honest and supportive relationships. It extends far beyond winning or losing or looking “better”.

Community — “the feeling of fellowship with others as a result of sharing a common attitude, interests and goals”

community wordle

The last few weeks I’ve been reflecting on the things going on in our society that don’t feel quite right. In my processing, I began to really step back and look at what really goes on – outside of the news and media, right in our own back yards. I thought about what really impacted my life over the last several years and realized there’s great power when a group of people come together.

From the girls, coaches, staff and board of directors at Girls on the Run to the wingmen, athletes and families in Athletes Serving Athletes, the students, mentors and steering committee members at LeadershipU and, most recently, the volunteers and kids at Thread – While each organization serves its own mission and purpose, the common thing is the community, passion, commitment and support surrounding each. Add to this amazing family and group of friends.

We truly have the ability to do great things, genuinely care about people, impact and influence change and provide support to those who don’t have it somewhere else. Looking around at the hundreds of people involved in these four small local organizations, we can create communities that give back without expecting in return and want to encourage others to do the best they can with whats important to them (not us!) while helping them when they need to be lifted back up. Each of us can do something to help make our community, whether large or small, a better place to live. Look for opportunities to do something intentionally nice for someone – every day.

Do You Share Your Story?

March 13, 2014

What story you might ask?  Everyone has a story — the story of you, your life, your experiences.  Think about what influences you or motivates you to do something.  Whether it be the television, a friend, a family member, an acquaintance or something you read  in social media — a personal story motivates us to take action.  Think about your parents and grandparents — How much did you learn from their experiences?  How cool did you think it was to be a kid and listen to them share about how they grew up or what they did for fun as a kid?

In today’s society of constant busy, we rarely take time to listen and share stories.  If you have children, take time to share your stories and listen to theirs.  Sometimes its good to hear that someone else struggled with the same thing, that we may all seem so different yet share similar experiences.  Sharing your story helps you to feel part of a group, a community, to feel self acceptance and to build trust in other people.  It helps to create amazing relationships with other adults and kids … It’s freeing!  You never know who you will impact by sharing a little piece of yourself.
