Salvere Blog: Putting Perspective on Perspective

February 29, 2016

Perspective:

a : the interrelation in which a subject or its parts are mentally viewed: point of view
b : the capacity to view things in their true relations or relative importance
During the blizzard last month, we took off to the park, channeling our inner child and enjoying the snow. One of our activities included building this snowman.

Of course, building such a masterpiece must be shared with friends. The response varied from someone thinking he was larger than life to “he’s puny.” It got me to thinking about how often perspective comes into play throughout life. Using this to look at new year’s resolutions (or any goal setting really) and why people use them or don’t anymore, perspective really helps examine what’s realistic.

With regard to health and fitness (cause that’s what we do on this blog!), lets examine a few things about perspective with exercise and nutrition. We might set a goal for pounds of weight to lose then we put a time frame on this and set some ideas with how to accomplish these goals. So, check out these few examples of how perspective can impact what you set out to achieve.

Goal should be measurable, right? Well, look at amounts of weight loss — If someone loses 1/2 lb per week, it often feels as if that’s insignificant. Do we then realized that 1/2lb per week = 25 lbs a year? So often one feels unhappy with ½ lb per week but happy with 25lbs per year.

Goals need a time frame, correct? Okay, many resolutions or goals with regard to fitness and healthy eating last 6 weeks or even 12 weeks. Then frustration sets in when we don’t see progress. Look at that amount of time vs an entire lifetime… A lifetime before and a lifetime after. What if we looked at the much bigger picture and allowed ourselves a lifetime of exploration and the ebb and flow of life to vary our physical activity over time as we change as individuals?
Take a second to sit back and put perspective on things.  Are you setting goals realistic to your life where it stands now? Is there a way you can readjust your mind set to feel successful?  Let us know your thoughts.

Salvere Blog: Snowstorms and Exercise

February 16, 2016

by Salvere Health and Fitness

So in the Maryland area, we got hit with a nice snowstorm!  YIKES!  It sure looked pretty, but nonetheless several were stuck inside because the conditions were not safe outside. Even though people could not go out to do their normal routines, work, school, gym, etc., there are some benefits to having a snowstorm….you still can get a great workout in….. if you have to go outside and shovel! You knew that was coming.

I know, it’s not ideal for a lot of people, especially if you have a lot to shovel, but it is great to be able to get fresh air and literally use all the muscles in your body to squat, lift, and throw the snow out from in front of your car!  I hope you had good form….I didn’t and felt it a little later on that day!  Hopefully, you stayed hydrated if you were outside for a long period of time.

If you didn’t brave the outdoors, plenty of exercises work well indoors to keep you on track.  We all carry with us the best exercise too around — It’s called your BODY WEIGHT! You can do push ups, squats, lunges, tricep dips, jumping jacks, planks, leg lifts, calf raises….the list can go on and on. Next time mother nature keeps you indoors, try this sample circuit workout — Do each exercise for 20 seconds, rest for 10 and move on to the next exercise. It takes ONLY 4 minutes!

Squat
Forward Lunges, alternating legs
Jumping jacks
Push ups
Elbow plank
Jog in place
Dips
Burpees

I
know it may be different than the equipment that you are use to everyday, but it is
good to mix it up, trick the body and do something different from time to time to maximize your weekly workouts!  So, when you get stuck inside for a day or two don’t skip your workouts!  Continue to move your body indoors and make use of your BODY WEIGHT to continue your journey to good health!

Salvere Blog: Rethinking Goals

February 11, 2016

by Salvere Health and Fitness

A new year already, and I didn’t quite get through the long list of to do’s from 2015! Did I set unreasonable goals or was I just overly ambitious?? Perhaps I’m going about this all-wrong and need to rethink the process. Does my life revolve around a new year with new goals and the previous year goals are just history? Kind of a clean slate idea!! All I know is that I am the only one accountable and if that’s the case, I can see some flaws in that set up.

If setting a goal of “getting in shape “ is high on the list, then what are the steps that should be taken to ensure success??? Goals are personal and need to be created knowing life style and time commitment. They also need to be achievable. Are you using a step-by- step approach with more easily achievable successes that would encourage you to continue?

Goal 1: find the type of activity that would make you want to continue
Goal 2: enlist some of your best buddies to join in
Goal 3: include family activities such as biking, hiking or wall climbing
Goal 4: have many choices such as yoga, tai chi, walking, etc.
Goal 5: try something new

Success can be measured in how your feel. Are you happier? Do you feel more connected to your family or community? Do you have more energy? Do you look in the mirror and think “Hey – not too bad?”

Get out there and enjoy every minute!

Salvere Blog: Effort and Resolutions

February 3, 2016

by Salvere Health and Fitness

Every year people make their New Year’s Resolutions about their careers, weight, exercise routines, friendships, money….the list goes on and on. By the time March rolls around, most abandon their resolutions because of lack of patience (we live in a world where we want everything NOW!), motivation, time, interest or frustration. It has happened to all of us. I have a suggestion. Instead of making a list of resolutions for an entire year, make a day to day effort to do two things:
— do one thing “Healthful” for yourself
— do one thing “Helpful” for others
Healthful…choosing at one meal to make a better eating choice, exercise at home or gym, go for a brisk walk, drink more water….just to name a few.
Helpful…help a coworker on a project at work, help your child with their homework, fix dinner (if you don’t usually do it…just to name a few.

When we make a daily effort to take care of ourselves and serve others, we feel good about our days. In doing so, we make daily, intentional effort in becoming healthier and happier. Focus on the small daily acts and then in time they will become a part of your journey. Let’s make an effort to form daily good habits.
